Respite Care Support

Careers need time away from caring, not just an afternoon, but genuine rest they can take without worrying about what's happening at home. That only works if the support left behind is actually good.

  • In-home respite, participant stays in their own environment
  • Community-based respite, activities and outings while carer is away
  • Scheduled regular respite or flexible as-needed support
  • Allied Health Assistant trained workers who follow clinical routines
  • Full handover from carer including routines, preferences, and health notes
What We Provide

Respite That Accounts for the Complexity of Real Disability Support

For participants with complex physical needs, spinal cord injury, MS, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, the quality of care during a respite shift is directly tied to the worker's understanding of that condition. Our workers hold Allied Health Assistant (Cert IV) qualifications, which means they have formal training in physical disability support, manual handling, personal care, and condition-specific techniques.

Before any respite shift, we conduct a full handover with the primary carer, covering routines, health notes, communication preferences, equipment procedures, and anything else the participant needs done the way they are used to having it done.

Yes. In-home and community-based respite are funded under Core Supports, Assistance with Daily Life (Category 01). Overnight or extended respite may also be funded under Short Term Accommodation (STA), which is a stated support in some NDIS plans. What is available depends on what is included in the participant's individual plan.

No. In-home respite means the support worker comes to the participant's home and provides care there while the carer is away. The participant stays in their own environment with their own equipment, bed, and routines. Community-based respite, where the worker takes the participant out during the respite period, is also available and can be combined with in-home time.

Before the first shift, we conduct a full handover session with the primary carer. This covers the participant's daily routine, personal care procedures, medication schedule, dietary needs, communication preferences, equipment use (hoist, wheelchair, mobility aids), behavioural cues, and anything else relevant to providing good care.

For planned regular respite, yes, we keep the same worker for consistent arrangements wherever possible. Familiarity matters enormously for participants, particularly those with ABI, autism, complex communication needs, or conditions that make new people unsettling.

We accommodate flexible booking where we can. Careers' needs are not always predictable, illness, work demands, or family situations can create urgent need for respite at short notice. We cannot guarantee same-day availability in all cases, but we work to respond to flexible requests more quickly than larger providers typically can.

Unused respite funding does not roll over between plan periods, and at plan review the NDIS may reduce respite allocation if it appears the hours were not needed. Many carers underuse respite because they feel guilty about taking breaks or have not found a provider they trust.

Yes. A respite shift naturally involves whatever the participant needs during that time, personal care, meals, community access, or just social time at home. These are not billed as separate supports.
