NDIS Community Participation

Getting to an activity is one thing. Actually taking part, connecting with people, trying something new, building a routine in your community, is what this support is for.

  • Social activities, sport, recreation, and community events
  • Support to access local venues, groups, and public spaces
  • Building genuine connections and confidence in your area
  • Fatigue and mobility-aware support from Allied Health qualified workers
  • Funded under NDIS Core Supports
What Community Participation Actually Means

The Difference Between Being Present and Actually Participating

A support worker who takes you to an event and sits next to you while you watch is not community participation, that is transport with company. Real participation means you are engaged, included, and contributing to something that matters to you.

At Kind Freedom, we approach community participation with the same clinical awareness we bring to all our services. Our Allied Health background means we understand how conditions like MS, spinal cord injury, and acquired brain injury affect participation in group settings, including fatigue thresholds, mobility planning, and how to structure an outing so it is genuinely enjoyable rather than exhausting.

Self & Plan-Managed Friendly

We support self-managed and plan-managed participants.

What's Included

The Range of Activities We Support

Community participation looks different for every person. The activities below cover the full scope of what Kind Freedom can support you with, your plan will reflect the activities that matter to you.

Sport and Physical Recreation

Attending the gym, swimming, wheelchair sport, park walks, or any physical activity in your routine. We assist with access, equipment, and participation, including safety during exercise where your condition requires it.

Arts, Hobbies and Creative Activities

Attending art classes, music groups, craft workshops, photography walks, or any hobby-based group in your community. We assist with access and participation, and stay as involved, or as hands-off, as you want during the activity itself.

Community Groups and Volunteering

Joining a local club, neighbourhood group, or volunteering program. Regular participation in a group builds a social network, something that cannot be achieved in a single outing, but can be built with consistent community support.

Education and Library Access

Attending education programs, TAFE, or using local library services. We support physical access and participation during the activity, including note-taking assistance, or staying present to assist if your condition fluctuates during the session.

Understanding Funding & Pricing

Community Participation is typically funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Social and Community Participation in NDIS plans, or through TAC rehabilitation budgets. This budget is flexible for recreational and social activities.

Plan-Managed

A plan manager handles invoicing and claims. We invoice them directly — no paperwork or out-of-pocket payments for you.

  • Zero paperwork — plan manager handles everything
  • Still full provider choice (registered or not)
  • No out-of-pocket payments to worry about

Community participation is funded under your Core Supports budget, specifically the Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation category (04). If this category has been allocated in your plan, you can use those funds with Kind Freedom. If you are not sure whether your plan includes this funding, your plan manager or support coordinator can confirm it. We are also happy to talk through your plan with you over the phone.

The category covers a wide range of activities, sport and recreation, social outings, arts and hobbies, community groups, volunteering, religious and cultural events, educational programs, entertainment, and general community access. The key criterion is that the activity takes place in the community and contributes to your social participation and wellbeing. If you have a specific activity in mind and are not sure whether it qualifies, ask us, in most cases it will.

That depends on the activity and your preference. In most cases, the support worker is there to provide physical assistance, manage access logistics, and ensure you can participate safely and comfortably, not to join the activity as a participant themselves. For some activities, particularly group or social settings, their presence is naturally more integrated. The level of involvement is determined by what works best for you, and we discuss this before each new activity.

We plan for variability rather than expecting every day to be the same. For conditions like MS, Parkinson's, or post-stroke recovery, we build flexibility into activity planning, shorter duration options for difficult days, rest points built into outings, and a clear understanding between you and your support worker about what a good exit looks like if needed. We never expect you to push through a bad day to meet a schedule.

Yes, and for many participants, that is exactly the goal. Where your NDIS plan includes capacity building objectives around community access and independence, we structure our participation support to progressively reduce assistance as your confidence and familiarity with activities grows. This is reviewed regularly and always at your pace. Some participants want ongoing support indefinitely; others are working toward independent participation in specific activities. Both are valid goals.

Completely. We do not have a list of approved activities or preferred venues. Your community participation support is planned around what you want to do, whether that is revisiting something you used to enjoy, trying something new, or building a regular routine around a specific activity. We provide input on accessibility and logistics, but the choice of activity is always yours.
