NDIS Transport Support

For many participants, the barrier to attending appointments, work, education, or community activities is not the destination, it's getting there. Transport support addresses that barrier directly, with a worker who understands your condition and how it affects your travel.

  • Medical appointments, specialist visits, and allied health sessions
  • Work, education, and training programs
  • Community activities, social outings, and cultural events
  • Shopping, errands, and practical community access
  • Building confidence and skills for independent travel over time
Why Transport Support Matters

Missing an Appointment Is Not Just an Inconvenience

When a participant cannot get to their physiotherapy session, specialist review, or day program, the impact compounds. The therapy gap widens. The plan review is less supported by current clinical data. The social connection doesn't happen. For people managing complex physical conditions, transport sits at the centre of whether their plan actually delivers anything.

For participants building toward independence, we can work alongside you on public transport routes, support you to navigate timetables and interchanges, and gradually reduce the level of assistance as your confidence grows.

NDIS Support Options

Understanding Funding & Pricing

Transport Support is typically funded under Core Supports — Transport in NDIS plans, or through TAC rehabilitation budgets. This covers coordination and accompaniment. The cost of taxis or rideshare is claimed separately from the same budget.

Plan-Managed

A plan manager handles invoicing and claims. We invoice them directly — no paperwork or out-of-pocket payments for you.

  • Zero paperwork — plan manager handles everything
  • Still full provider choice (registered or not)
  • No out-of-pocket payments to worry about

Yes. The NDIS funds transport support in two main ways. Some participants have a dedicated Transport budget (Category 02) listed as a stated support in their plan. Others use their Core Supports budget to fund a support worker's time accompanying them to and from appointments or activities. Which applies to you depends on what your plan states, we can help you work through this before committing to anything.

Yes. Support workers at Kind Freedom hold current drivers licences and carry appropriate insurance for transporting participants in their personal vehicle. Mileage is invoiced separately from the worker's time, at the NDIS price guide rate for provider travel. We document each trip clearly so invoicing is accurate and transparent.

Where a wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) is required, we coordinate with specialist accessible transport providers and can accompany you in that vehicle. The cost of an accessible vehicle may be funded under your Transport budget (Category 02) or other plan supports depending on your circumstances. We can help you identify the right option and connect with appropriate providers in Melbourne.

This varies depending on your individual plan, your goals, and how transport has been funded (as a stated Category 02 amount or via Core Supports hours). There is no standard number. What we find is that participants who have regular appointment schedules, weekly OT, fortnightly physio, and a day program, typically benefit from 4–8 transport sessions per month. We can work with your support coordinator to make sure transport support fits within your overall plan budget.

Yes, and this is often the most efficient way to use your plan budget. For example, a worker might assist with your morning routine, drive you to your physiotherapy appointment, wait during the session, and then return home. The support worker time throughout the shift is claimed under the relevant Core Supports category, and vehicle costs are claimed separately. This avoids needing two separate workers for what is effectively one continuous support period.

We provide transport support across Melbourne's western suburbs, including Sunshine, St Albans, Footscray, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Altona, Laverton, and Melton, as well as northern suburbs including Broadmeadows, Craigieburn, and Essendon. We also cover trips into the Melbourne CBD, Dandenong, and surrounding metropolitan areas for appointments or activities. If you're unsure whether we cover your area, call us and we'll confirm directly.

Yes. Switching providers is your right under the NDIS. You do not need to give a formal reason, and your current provider cannot prevent you from leaving (though your service agreement may include a notice period, typically two weeks). We can walk you through the switching process and make it as straightforward as possible. There is no obligation to commit before speaking with us.
